It would be better to support images like the HTML 4.0 <OBJECT > tag allows. Why? The OBJECT tag is not an empty tag like IMG is. It allows the client to choose from graphic formats it supports; it degrades gracefully. One can specify the MIME type as a tag attribute, thus allowing client-side rejection without first querying the server. Plus, it is going to be in the XHTML standard.
