Actually, I have seen embedded links in RSS 0.91, simply by putting the HTML in the field. I don't know if it's legal or not, but it seems to work just fine. (I use a home-grown aggregator using the Perl XML::RSS module, which seems to be pretty strict about what it will accept, and embedded links get through it just fine.)

One advantage <scriptingNews> has over RSS 0.91 is the idea of items that have NO link. For example, the RSS version of Scripting News is pretty useless, because Dave writes a lot of paragraphs that are narrative, rather than being "news" items with a link. Also, the first link in a paragraph becomes the <title>/<link> pair, and that might not be the MAIN link in the paragraph.

The advantage of RSS over <scriptingNews> is that I have an off-the-shelf parser for RSS. I haven't yet found a Perl-based parser for <scriptingNews>. Yeah, I could write one. I just haven't had/made the time.....
