Background

In late November a bootstrap began of a way to do weblog backups using RSS.

It was noted that the same format could be used to implement a new form of software called a Blog Browser.

There is a simple flat file, called files.xml, that links together a bunch of other files, that forms the archive of a weblog.

I threw something together then, planning to do something more formal later, and now is the time to do that. After the first draft is posted and linked into Scripting News, please post questions in the discussion group here, and I will attempt to answer them either there or in this spec. A discussion is already underway at Sam Ruby's weblog.

It's especially important that people implementing blog browsers review this specification and comment and feed back. I have not implemented one myself, so I may miss some of the issues raised on the reading side of the application.
